USB doesn't work

USB device not recognized

Read the complete step before making changes. Stop if unsure or if new warnings appear.

  1. Unplug the USB device and insert it into another port on the PC. For a storage device, use “Safely Remove Hardware” first if possible and never remove it during a copy process.

  2. A USB hub is a distributor with multiple ports. As a test, connect the device directly to the PC. If the device has its own power supply, connect it.

  3. If possible, test the device on a second personal or trusted PC. Do not connect unknown or suspicious USB sticks. When asked to format, be sure to cancel if there is data on it.

  4. Right-click Start → Device Manager. Find the device with a yellow warning symbol. Double-click it and note the device status and error code under “General”.

  5. Only for clearly identified affected devices: right-click in Device Manager → Uninstall device. DO NOT activate an option offered to delete the driver package. Restart Windows; it tries to set up the device again. Do not remove USB controllers or unknown devices. Skip if unsure.

  6. Click “Cancel” for “You need to format the disk.” Also do not select “Initialize” or “New Volume”. These actions can make data recovery more difficult. If files are irreplaceable, stop using the device and seek professional help.
